In
the episode above is an example of a soap opera, which consists of a few
different families which all face some sort of problem that the whole of the
family would be effected by. However, I will be focusing on the McDonald family
and I shall be analysing each character.
In
this episode it’s based around the McDonald family; Steve has recently come to
terms with his depression and has told his family about it so this is like a
continuation or overcoming his depression.
Steve
shares the pub with his mum Liz; he is a comical character that comes out with
witty bits and sayings. However he uses his humour as a defence mechanism as a
distraction, which hides the truth about how he really feels. He suffers with
depression and felt a shame of telling his family members because he thought
that they would think less of him. In this episode I’d say that Steve is popular character and is liked by many of the other characters but struggles to open up to even his closest friends and pushes them away and in this episode he does his best to go back to normality.
Michelle is Steve's partner, she is plays a loving life partner
In the short preview above is an example of a crime drama,
the main characters in it are Linden and holder who play detectives of murder
scenes and have to solve the murders by collecting evidence, however they have
to over come any obstacles that try to stop them from doing so.
Detective Linden plays the good cop, in which she uses her
womanly and mother figure towards males and children in order to get them to
trust her so that any evidence is exposed. She has a side to her which is dark
and filled with depressing emotions which sometimes shows throughout the
episode, however she tries her best to put those feelings aside as best as she
can and but sometimes her emotions get the better of her and sometimes gets in
the way of her investigations which usually works against her.
Linden plays the mother role in the episode and is the one
who takes control of the investigations but has Holder to help her solve the
murders. You could potentially say that she is the matriarch in each episode
because she is in control and because she has some much strength and power when
it comes to solving the murders.
Detective Holder is the bad cop, which shows that he has to
use his temper and aggressive side in order to try and frighten the suspects of
each murder. He has a dark past like his partner but he is open about it with
her and looks towards her to get some guidance. Holder uses his physical and
street smarts to get any evidence to help him get any information which will
help him solve the murders, he doesn’t look like your average detective in a
long jacket, hat and magnifying glass; he dresses as though he is a criminal
himself in which he uses to his advantage. The rough look and tattoos make it
easy for the criminals to come to him, as they believe he is one of them.
You could say that Holder is the patriarch in the episode
because of his he acts and the way he uses Linden as a go to guide for support.
He likes to have power but as much as Linden because he isn’t as confident as
her and he lets his aggressiveness get in the way.
In this drama the audiences emotions constantly flow with
storyline because it builds so much suspense and leaves the audience wanting
more after each episode. Through out the drama there is more than one plot
point because so much happens an example of the plot points is when Linden
finds out that one of her prisoners faces the death sentence but has some for
of relevance to her currant investigation. The killing is has open endings in
which has plenty of cliff-hanger’s this is to keep the audience hooked onto
each episode and so that they keep watching.
The Inbetweeners (series 3,
episode 1- The fashion show) is based around four characters and they all play
a certain roll, which contextualizes as a family. I will be analyzing each
character and explaining my own interpretations about each character.
The main character
"Will" that thinks he’s above from everyone because he attended a
private high school plays the matriarch of the group, he's the one who always
tries to take control of situations and has many moral beliefs. If will is in
anyway challenged about his moral beliefs he tends to stick by his one friend
in order to remain in power.
"Simon" plays the
part of a patriarch, so he's like the dominant male that again tries to act
responsible but is easily persuaded by others to make irresponsible choices but
agrees with the matriarch to over right others.
“Jay” plays an
irresponsible character, which feels as though he has to lie to his friends in
order to build up an image as being the "experienced" one. To
elaborate further he lies to his friends in order to make them believe he has
this other side to him which makes him look cooler, however his friends see
past it all and questions him about it leaving him thinking they believe in his
lies, when in actual fact they don't.
“Neil” is a character who seems
rather absent most of the time but in actual fact does seem to be confident and
experienced in social situations but doesn’t seem to talk about it very much
with his friends. When it comes to doing something irresponsible he doesn’t
question it he goes a long with his friends even though he knows the
consequences he’ll face later on. He has a confidence when talking to girls but
again is quite conservative when talking about it with his friends, however now
and again he does mention his past experiences.
In the Inbetweeners comedy
sitcom they usually is an instigator that tries to convince everyone in
thinking it is a good idea to do something they shouldn’t. The storyline then
develops further more into having something bad happen which gets the group
into trouble, and then moves on to having the issue being resolved which makes
the sitcom a closed storyline.
The first plot point was
they first found out that “Will” got the job of collecting the money which
helped raise money for the fashion show, even though he was totally against it.
He pretty much had no choice as his headmaster was putting him in charger of
the money whether he liked it or not.
The second plot point was
when “Simon” went on the runway with his private parts sticking out without him
realizing, which resulted in him and his crush Carly being humiliated in front
of the whole of the school and parents of the students who were involved with
the fund raiser.
After the second plot point
the issue was resolved and ended with the main characters concluding what had
happened during the episode which was narrated by “Will” and using flashbacks
of the events the day they went through.
An example of synergy is the music video above Fergie- L.ALOVE(la la) ft. YG, because it uses big media conglomerates which are linked to the video in which it will help the music video go global and the products a long with the artist will become more popular and will sell to the young adults. Beats and Apple have allowed there newest products in the music video, such as the Beats pill and the iPhone 6 which allows them to boost the popularity of the products using the artist as bate to attract the products target market. Conglomerates such as Beats and Apple use synergy to boost there profits because their diversity (such as the iPhone, Beats headphones etc) in example they own lots of companies.
